2003 Interns Featured at Convocation:
2004 Recruitment Begins
On Friday, November 7, 2003, the Duke Leadership in an Aging Society
Program will kick-of recruitment for the summer of 2004 Internship
Program with its annual Convocation of Mentors and Interns which
will be followed by a reception and information session for prospective
applicants. The Convocation will feature a panel of interns from
2003 discussing their internship experiences moderated by Susan
Harmuth of the NC Office of Long Term Care. The events will be held
in Room E, of the Searle Center, Duke Medical Center Library, with
the panel beginning at 2:00 pm followed by a reception honoring
the 2003 interns and mentors and an information session for prospective
applicants. Attendance at this event is not required for applicants,
but it is an excellent opportunity to meet current interns, mentors
and alumni of the Program. Also, November 7 is the first date that
application packets are available for 2004 summer internships. If
you need more information about the events or are unable to attend
the event but want to request an application packet and information

Occasional Policy Paper on Housing Released:
Intern Jocelyn Fina Contributing Author
At the 2003 North Carolina Conference on Aging, Duke LTC released
the latest issue in its Occasional Policy Paper Series: “Housing
for Older Adults in North Carolina: More than Shelter.” Jocelyn
Fina, 2003 Leadership in an Aging Society Program Intern, was a
contributing author to the issue. Through her internship with the
NC Division of Aging, Jocelyn worked with the Governor’s Advisory
Council on Aging which was the sponsor of the activities reported
in the issue. Ann B. Johnson, Chair of the Governor’s Advisory

2003 Gabel Interns Named
Three outstanding Duke undergraduates as Gabel Interns for the summer of 2003: David Barry, Lisa Jones and Ana Panduro. The Gabel Family Endowment was established in 1998 by the family of Frederick D. and Kathleen Roberson Gabel to support mentored internships opportunities and leadership development for Duke students who have the potential to be the next generation of leaders to address the complex issues facing an aging society. 2002 Gabel Intern Awarded Hart Fellowship
Sona Chikarmane, 2003 Duke Grad and 2002 Leadership in an Aging
Society Gabel Intern, has been selected as a 2003-2004 Hart Fellow.
Chikarmane, who through her internship explored cultural issues
in death and dying, will work in residential treatment centers for
substance abusers and people living with HIV/AIDS in India. The
Hart Leadership Program of the Sanford Institute for Public Policy
places fellows with organizations throughout the developing world
to conduct research and fieldwork on pressing policy issues.

Center Report Features Franzese and Aspnes
The Summer 2003 edition of the Center Report for the Duke University
Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development features the
interdisciplinary collaboration of 2002 Leadership in an Aging Society
Interns, Alexis Franzese and Ann Aspnes. For complete story see
