Program Overview
The "year" of the Leadership in an Aging Society Program
revolves around key program events. The year begins in the spring,
when students who have been selected as interns for the upcoming summer,
participate in the Leadership Seminar which
helps prepare them for their placements. Each year in November the
annual Convocation is held to celebrate
the accomplishments of interns completing their experiences with the
program and to thank their mentors. On the same day as the Convocation,
an Open House begins recruitment for the coming student
internships group. Additional informal networking events among
interns, alumni of the program and mentors are held throughout the
year to assist students as they explore career paths in aging.

The Leadership Seminar, directed by George L. Maddox, PhD, introduces
students to "The Territory of Aging"
and "Concepts of Leadership"
through selected readings, discussions and videos. The goal of the
Seminar is to help prepare students from a variety of disciplines,
who have been selected as interns, prepare for their upcoming summer
experiences. In addition, the Seminar is an intergenerational experience
through the participation of the Senior Leadership
group from the UNC-Institute on Aging. The Seminar usually is held
in late March to coordinate with the George L. Maddox Annual Lecture,
which was established by the Duke
Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development to honor
Dr. Maddox's career.

Convocation
Each year in November, the Leadership in an Aging Society Program
interns and their mentors from the past summer gather on the Duke
Campus to reflect on and celebrate their experiences. Each year a

invited to reflect on his or her own career path and what led them
to interests in aging. Recent Convocation speakers have included Keith
Meador, MD, Director, Duke End of Life Care Institute; Elise Bolda,
PhD, intern alumna and Associate Professor, Muskie School of Public
Service, USM; Jim Bernstein, Assistant Secretary for North Carolina
Health and Human Services; and Robert Applebaum, PhD, Scripps Gerontology
